The title “Seat of Wisdom” refers to Mary as the Temple or Throne of Wisdom, emphasizing her role as the dwelling place of Jesus Christ, who is Divine Wisdom. In Scripture, Wisdom is not just an abstract concept but the Eternal Word. When Mary holds the Infant Jesus, she is literally His throne.
During the Medieval Ages, scholars refined the connection between Mary and Wisdom. Odo, a Benedictine Abbot of Battle Abbey (d.c. 1200), elucidated this relationship in his writings: “Philosophy is called the pursuit or love of wisdom. Mary is, therefore, the philosophy of Christians, for whoever desires to find true Wisdom must direct his love and endeavor to Mary.”
Turning to Mary, the Seat of Wisdom, ensures that we act according to Divine Wisdom. She is ever ready to share her Wisdom with the least of us; we have only to ask Her, and She will give us the treasures of her Wisdom.
